It is with great joy that the Missions & Evangelism Committee and the Session present the Brazilian Evangelical Mission of the Amazon as the recipient of the Easter Sacrificial Offering. Our long-time missionary partners, Donna and Eric Shrift, and their son and daughter-in-law, John and Rebecah, are a part of this outreach. John, Rebecah, and their three children live among the Yanomami Tribe. This remote and primitive people group along the northern edge of the Amazon basin, are only accessible by bush plane or several days journey by river. The Yanomami have only recently had their language set into written form and the New Testament translated into their various dialects.
Opening seven primary schools among the tribe and continuing to oversee the work, John, Rebecah and their missionary partners have trained native teachers to lead most of the classes. Key in developing Bible literacy, the schools are growing, and to date there are about 500 students, kindergarten to 5th grade.
Supplies for the school must be flown in by bush plane. Funding for this effort was previously provided by Brazilian churches in more developed areas of the country. However, the pandemic has hit Brazil particularly hard; churches have been closed for the last year and are unable to fund the effort. Our offering will be used to purchase and transport materials to the schools and to further the spread of the Gospel to these very special children.
